Werewolf 101
THIS INFORMATIONS IS EXPECTED TO HE KNOWN BYE ALL MEMBERS FOR SMOOTH ROLEPLAY. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Lycans, Shapeshifters, Lunatics, Werewolves, all are names we give to the furry men with claws and fangs. Legends tell us a man becomes one by wearing wolf skin belts, shouding in fur body cloaks, casting magic spells, drinking from a wolf's paw, and of course the cursed bite.
While all of the others do have some historical correlation, it is in fact the famous bite that brings about the curse/gift of being a werewolf. History tells us that this is actually a rare cause of transformation, and it's true— because most people don't survive a werewolf attack to undergo the seemingly uncontrollable changes. True, a person can be born a werewolf if at least one parent passes the gene onto them, but werewolf families are rare genetically (which will be explained momentarily) and the few that do exist live virtually off the grid, their kids home schooled, if at all, and live away from the eyes of oblivious humans until their children (hardly ever having an only child) are all grown and hopefully learned to control their behaviors.
As a werewolf, you don't turn into a raging animal on a full moon, necessarily. Once bitten, over the course of a few days you may begin to developed acute senses and are more reactive to stimuli. Your athletic abilities increase and you develop more stamina and even enhanced immune and regenerative abilities. In addition more testosterone is introduced into your blood stream, making you more aggressive and powering your sex drive (hence the many kids). What few, sparse studies that have been performed in the past haven't given much of an explanation to this change, nor why it's scientifically possible, but it is believed to all be connected to the "cursed" bite. Theoretically, a chemical may exist in "werewolf" saliva which may act as if it were a retro virus of sorts and alter the victim's genetic code, allowing them to possess these abilities. However werewolf off spring are rare for two reasons. For one the gene it's self is recessive and would hardly ever show up in the next generation. Secondly, because of the increased natural aggression, such a physically and psychologically stressful activity would cause shifting and end up with the other person dead, hence no possibility for conception.
Now what exactly happens when you transform? Well you don't turn into a wolf necessarily, but you may grow excessive amounts of hair and may protrude longer nails. This has to do with a whole bunch more science stuff involving a mass of stored protiens (which you hair and nails are made of) rapidly forming together to create thick strands of hair across your entire body. These hairs will eventually fall out when shifting is over as your follicles return to normal size and become too small for the hairs to remain. As for the claws, much like a cat, you will find they are voluntarily retractable in "human" form, but as muscles tense they protrude from your fingers when in "werewolf" form. When shifted, your senses are inhanced even further as your animal instincts are increased, but at the cost of clouding your judgement. You tend to think about three, mostly two, basic desires. Blood lust, sex, and sometimes food. You are essential an animalistic human with lots of body hair, retractable claws, and nothing but testisterone and a helluva lot of calories powering you.
There is an exception to this image, however. This is where the line of hardly feasible science and the supernatural blur. Certain individuals will actually shift into such an in human form, they appear to be giant wolves. These people are incredibly aggressive and dominating unlike any other and will be explains in greater detail later.
However you are not invincible. You cannot regrow whole limbs or survived decapitation or a destroyed heart. Another weakness that can be traced back to legend is a werewolf's lethality to silver bullets. While in bullet form they are deadly, any amount of silver poses a risk to a werewolf's health. They are naturally allergic to silver and when they come in contact with dense quantities can experience rashes, swelling, even hemorrhages and, if shot by a bullet, lethal poisoning.
But of course, when exactly would you shift were you a werewolf? Well, there are two times when it would be possible to turn into a raging monster. Once is when your heart rate reaches a certain level. This is different for all people but usually anywhere from 180 to 200 beats per minute. This type of shift can occur when under extreme stress and can often be called upon by adrenaline. As for the ladies, if you PMS, then you have it even worse. The second way shifting can occur is what inspires the legend of the full moon. It has nothing to do with the lunar orbit or mystical power of the moon, but because of animal instinct. As the moon brightens, your natural insitincts may emerge when staring at it's natural light. All animals are attracted to light, and when a shapshifter is exposed to the most natural nocturnal light of all, a frenzy begins. These overpowering emotions and natural urges become difficult to supress the day or two befor and after the official full moon, but when the sky is at it's brightened, it's impossible to ignore.
Now believe it or not, there are such things as werewolf packs. Bands of shapeshifters may form as a gang, with a typically strict hierarchy. The Alpha is the leader. Almost always male, he has complete natural dominate over the other members, called Betas. This right of leadership is obtained when they establish themselves as the dominat member of the pack. Were they to be killed, the next most powerful member (usually the killer) would take his place. Again, supernatural effects take place as the new Alpha now finds himself able to transform as a large beast capable of killing hundreds. However, due to their naturally unstable nature, they find it more difficult to control their natural urges and avoid most contact outside the pack. For a pack to actually be officially established with an Alpha as its head is possible only when the potential Alpha gains followers who pledge their allegiance to him. A Beta may pledge and leave as they wish, but the rest ofthe pack may not make either very easy.
So here is the basic gist of werewolves.
